Begin your journey on Hawaii’s Big Island. Kona is the ideal place to discover the Pacific Ocean’s breathtaking marine diversity. Embark on a whale-watching excursion for an opportunity to see humpback whales and dolphins along the Kona Coast. Snorkel among the island’s colorful tropical fish, and explore the spectacular landscapes and fauna on shore. Take a helicopter ride over white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and black-lava landscapes. Or visit Volcanoes National Park, a unique ecosystem shaped by active volcanoes and filled with endemic plants and animals.

After a night in Port Moresby, fly by local air to one of four remote areas. In the Southern Highlands, enter the world of the Huli Wigmen, who fashion elaborate headdresses from their own hair and vibrant bird feathers. Or visit the Western Highlands, an area famed for orchids and birds of paradise, and get to know the Melpa people. Alternatively, venture off the beaten path down the Sepik River basin, known for exquisite woodcarvings and imposing spirit houses. Or head to Kokopo Beach on New Britain Island to explore the island’s World War II history and volcanic landscapes.

Borneo’s majestic forests have enticed scientists and visitors for more than 150 years. At the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, get a rare up-close look at the highly intelligent orangutan—only found on Borneo and Sumatra. Watch these longhaired, orange-hued primates swing through the trees when they return to the center for supplemental feedings. Glide down the Kinabatangan River and seek out another endemic primate, the proboscis monkey, named for its unique-looking protruding nose. This area has a high concentration of other wildlife, including macaques, rainbow-colored butterflies and many species of birds.
Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan
Uncover the hidden realm of the stealthy Bengal tiger in India’s fabled forests. Visit either Ranthambore National Park, the former hunting grounds of the maharajahs of Jaipur, or Kanha National Park, the inspiration for Rudyard Kipling’s classic The Jungle Book. Venture into the park with an expert to track down the elusive big cat, encountering leopards, sloth bears, wild boars, monkeys and other wildlife. Return to the “Pink City” of Jaipur—nicknamed for the rose color of many of its buildings—to explore the ornate City Palace and the Mughal-era observatory of Jantar Mantar.
Oberoi Vanyavilas, Aman-i-Khás or Banjaar Tola; Oberoi Rajvilas
Tanzania’s Serengeti Plain is home to the legendary big five: lions, leopards, cape buffaloes, elephants and rhinos. Your safari adventure begins with a game drive to the lodge. Witness the continuous migration of the plain’s wildebeest as they move by the thousands, accompanied by gazelles and zebras. Experience the thrill of seeing the big cats in the wild and take in the grandeur of the ecosystem known to the Masai as the “Endless Plains,” home to some 70 different mammals and more than 500 species of birds.
Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti
If you have already visited the Serengeti or wish to experience another side of the plain, head to the Ngorongoro Crater, the largest unbroken caldera in the world. With your expert guide, observe the crater’s permanent population of about 25,000 animals, including bull elephants, critically endangered black rhinos and lions.
Ngorongoro Crater Lodge
After landing in Kigali, our group splits into two. One departs directly for the verdant mountains of Volcanoes National Park, while the other explores Rwanda’s cosmopolitan capital before gorilla trekking. Both groups will spend a night in Kigali. The forest-covered Virunga Mountains are home to the 700 or so remaining mountain gorillas in the world. Accompanied by an expert naturalist guide, hike through bamboo forest to get up close with a family of gorillas. Spend an hour watching these peaceful giants munch leaves, groom each other and play in the forest.
Kigali Serena Hotel and Mountain Gorilla View Lodge
Opt to spend all three nights in Kigali instead of gorilla trekking in the mountains. At the Kigali Memorial Center, learn about the 1994 genocide through the survivors’ stories, as well as how Rwandans are creating an environment for unity and healing. Visit the Akilah Institute, an inspiring vocational training program for young women that is transforming lives through education. Choose to take a helicopter ride over the Virunga Mountains, a lush volcanic landscape dotted with picturesque lakes.
